Student Aid Ledgers 1933-1950

This series consists of seventeen volumes of student aid records; one for each academic year from 1933/34 to 1949/50. The first fifteen volumes are bound and the last two are post bound. The information entered on each page is essentially the same for all volumes, although the arrangement of the volumes varies. At the head of each page is the name of the aid source and the assigned university account number. The name and school of each individual receiving aid from a particular source was entered. The amount awarded or loaned for each term was also entered, as was the total for the year. As disbursements were made they were subtracted from the total funds, thus forming a running total of available funds from each aid source. The amount awarded or loaned to each student was entered under the school or college in which the student was enrolled. It is thus possible to determine the amount of funds awarded to students in any given school or college, as well as the total funds awarded to individual students. Some funds were restricted to students in a given discipline, such as music, and in those cases other schools and colleges are not listed. The Student Aid Ledger for 1933/34 is divided into seperate sections for scholarships and loans. The sources of aid in the scholarship section are categorized as scholarships, prizes, fellowships, and rebates. Each source is also identified as endowed, gift, or appropriated. The loan section has foundation, long term, and short term subsections. Loans are also designated as endowed, gift, or appropriated. The 1933/34 Ledger has tab guides indicating the various subsections but no index.

Both Northwestern University's Evanston Campus and the city of Evanston originated with the purchase of 379 acres from John H. Foster by the University's Trustees in 1853. Over the next twelve years the University opened its doors, the village of Evanston was platted, recorded and incorporated, and the University acquired additional real estate holdings. The Trustees purchased the Billings, Robinson, and Snyder farms and were made a gift of lands owned by Orrington Lunt. These holdi...
